The Sony Emotion Engine
The Emotion Engine is the CPU for Sony's PlayStation 2, developed in a Sony - Toshiba cooperation and introduced in 1999. Data bus, cache memory as well as all registers are implemented in 128 bit technology, integrated on a single 0.18 micron process technology chip, making it the first commercial 128 bit CPU. The Emotion Engine, based on the MIPS R5900, is sort of a combination CPU and DSP processor, whose main function is simulating 3D worlds. It integrated all necessary units on the die: The MIPS III CPU core, 2 vector units, FPU, image processing unit (basically an MPEG2 decoder with some other capabilities), 10-channel DMA controller, graphics interface unit, RDRAM and I/O interfaces, all connected via a shared 128-bit internal bus.

This is still one of the most interesting CPUs that has been created - the advancements made in its design in 2000 were mostly unheard of in most any CPU and at the time its ability to run games and multimedia programs (meaning the CPU's pure capacity - if it wasn't for the PlayStation 2's limited VRAM System RAM) was unmatched. The problem with the console itself was of course that graphics take up a lot of memory. It was promising at the time and it's a pity the architecture was not continued somehow. There are people doing Linux beowulf clusters with this CPU (in the form of the PlayStation 2) which are running better than one can usually expect from CPUs of that speed. This CPU is good at complex mathematical equations in terms of raw power-per-clock-cycle probably more efficient than any modern desktop PC's CPU.
